We are beyond excited and honored to tell you guys this: September 28 is officially recognized as ‘Celebrate Astoria Day,” and the first annual celebration will be held September 28th, 2015.

The amount of pride in our neighborhood is unsurpassed. We have residents who tell us they’ve lived her for 50 years, and could never call anywhere else home. We’ve had other people tell us they grew up in Astoria with their parents, moved away, and realized there was no place like home – only to come back to Astoria. Even the 20 somethings that find themselves moving to Astoria from places like the Midwest tell us no where else has ever felt so “right” to live in. Astoria is an amazing place, with even more amazing people.

Summers and Fall in Astoria are filled with street festivals and parties and flea markets, but what we thought was lacking was a day specifically to celebrate the neighborhood, along with all its residents. That’s where the idea for Celebrate Astoria Day came from! We wanted a way to showcase our neighbors – the people we have learned so much more about since starting Give Me Astoria.  ‘Celebrate Astoria Day’ will serve as an annual event where residents can hang out, socialize, participate in fun games and giveaways, and come together to take pride in our neighborhood.

Local performers will be invited to entertain – because we all know there’s no lack of artists here in Astoria. We have some of the world’s most talented singers, dancers, poets and more!

The event will promote the sense of community that we are so well known for. Further, it will serve to help local businesses, vendors, non-for-profits to help stimulate their businesses and foster their relationships with residents.

This wouldn’t have been possible without the genuine support we received from all of you, and especially from our local politicians. Councilman Costa Constantinides issued an official Proclamation, recognizing September 28th, 2015 as ‘Celebrate Astoria Day,’ and New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo issued an official letter of recognition as well. Both were presented by Councilman Constantinides, who spoke about how wonderful Astoria is, saying, “There’s more than 100 languages spoken in Queens, and they’re all spoken right here in Astoria. Astoria is such a diverse neighborhood, and with all the things that have changed, it has never lost it’s neighborhood feel.”

The Proclamation was presented at an event, generously hosted by Sacco and Fillas Law – the managing partners of which are life long Astorians as well! The event was catered by Stix Mediterranean Grill, and we’d like to thank them as well.

We can’t wait for next years celebration, and we’re already excited! If you’re interested in being part of the Celebrate Astoria Day committee, or want to know more information as we get closer to the event, send your first name, last name, and e-mail address to info@givemeastoria.com.
